Te MATA is a creative studio devoted to art, music and developing ideas of global cultural significance. Our mission is to create with purpose and meaning appealing to as many senses as possible. Our specialty lies in developing striking visual imagery accompanied by tactile functions. Each project we embark on starts from a blank canvas that we slowly begin to paint with our spirit of curiosity, experimentation and naïvety. We are enthusiastic about editorial projects from hardcover books to xeroxed fanzines, specialising, but not exclusive to our Latin American identity and narratives.

The story behind the name Te MATA:
Maori legend tells the story of a giant named Te Mata. The daughter of his rival, Hinerakai, had a plan to make him fall in love with her to prevent war between tribes. The plan succeeded but she too fell in love. To prove his worthiness, Te Mata accepted a series of nearly impossible challenges. The handsome giant died attempted his final task. Te Mata Peak stands 400m above sea level and depicts the outline of his body. Located in the Hawke’s Bay in New Zealand, it is known by locals as the Sleeping Giant.

Una leyenda maorí cuenta la historia de un gigante llamado Te Mata. La hija de su rival, Hinerakai, ideó un plan para hacer que él se enamorara de ella y así evitar una guerra entre tribus. El plan tuvo éxito, pero ella también terminó enamorándose. Para demostrar que era digno de su amor, Te Mata aceptó una serie de desafíos casi imposibles. El apuesto gigante murió al intentar completar la última de estas pruebas. Te Mata Peak, que se eleva a 400 metros sobre el nivel del mar, dibuja la silueta de su cuerpo.
